Most of us are familiar with the expensive crystals such as Diamonds, Sapphires, Rubies and Topaz, that are in many engagement rings and jewellery.
My true admiration of the more common variety of crystals started many years ago with the purchase of an Amethyst and Pink Tourmaline pendant – still a favourite of mine today.
A special connection with a Rose Quartz heart led to me journeying deeper into the amazing crystal kingdom. I qualified in crystal healing and then as a teacher with the Academy of Crystal Awakening.
I later retired from practising energy and crystal healing, however my love for crystals and working with them continues.

“In a crystal we have clear evidence of the existence of a formative life principle, and though we cannot understand the life of a crystal, it is nonetheless a living being” ...Nikola Tesla
CRYSTALS AND CULTURES
Crystals and stones come from Mother Earth, and indigenous medicine people have been using them to help and to heal for millennia.
It is written that crystals were used as far back as Lemuria and Atlantis. These cultures believed, as many of us do now, that crystals carry with them an energetic template of divine knowledge and wisdom and that they could initiate healing and strengthen our connection to Mother Earth.
Some of the oldest amulets are of Baltic amber. Amber beads were discovered in Britain 10,000 years ago.
Many ancient cultures such as the Egyptians, Native American Indians and peoples of South America, Peru and Mexico recognized the powerful properties of crystals.
The Egyptians included crystals such as Lapis Lazuli, Carnelian, Emerald, Clear Quartz and Turquoise in their jewellery and healing tools. Galena (lead ore) was ground down and used as an eye shadow known as kohl.
Malachite was favoured for its healing purposes and to promote inner vision. The head-dresses of Pharaohs were lined with Malachite.

CRYSTAL STRUCTURES
“A crystal is a solid whose atoms are arranged in a ‘highly ordered’ repeating pattern. These patterns are called crystal systems. If a mineral has its atoms arranged in one of them, then that mineral is a crystal. All minerals form in one of seven crystal systems: isometric, tetragonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, triclinic, hexagonal and trigonal. Each is distinguished by the geometric parameters of its unit cell, the arrangement of atoms repeated throughout the solid to form the crystal object we can see and feel” ...International Gem Society
Crystals are grouped according to their structure/atomic lattice. The shape of the lattice determines which system the crystal/stone belongs to.
Examples:
Isometric: Diamond, Fluorite, Pyrite
Tetragonal: Zircon, Apophyllite, Wulfenite
Hexagonal: Aquamarine, Emerald, Sugilite
Trigonal: Amethyst, Quartz, Tourmaline
Orthorhombic: Celestite, Topaz, Dumortierite
Monoclinic: Moonstone, Chrysocolla, Kunzite
Triclinic: Labradorite, Turquoise, Kyanite
Another group is…
Amorphous: They have no crystal structure as they have cooled too quickly to crystalise E.g. Obsidian and Moldavite, or they are organic, such as Amber.
CRYSTALS TODAY AND THEIR USES
Crystals are being used in far more ways in modern technology and our daily lives than we might realise.
Most screens now have liquid crystal displays. LCD’s are used in computers, watches, clocks and diagnostic equipment. Silicon crystal chips are used in pacemakers and rubies in surgical lasers.
Crystal technology is utilised in solar cells and water purification.
Alternatively crystals can be worked with in energy healing, meditation, pendulum/divination work, journaling, grids and mandalas.
CRYSTALS AND HEALING
“Crystals are divine gifts and sacred tools from Mother Earth that assist us in our growth, transformation and healing. They are one of the many medicines of the planet, with each crystal holding a specific energy that can assist us in our healing process” ...Rachelle Charman, Academy of Crystal Awakening
Crystals can help us in our journey back to peace and harmony. They assist us in connecting with our inner essence, to expand our awareness and see the truth of our experiences. To be guided to release any issues and suppressed emotions that are holding us back from stepping into our own power and that of divine love.
In healing, crystals are used to clear our chakras and auric field and bring us into a balanced state. Also to connect with our inner child, for soul retrieval, past life work and for grounding and protection.
The natural medicine of crystals can also be used by making vibrational essences. The healing energy of the crystal is extracted and transferred into water which forms the base, and then made into elixirs or sprays (similar to flower essences and homeopathy).
